Empty chair by the sink, one plate on the rack
Phone face down on the table, no call coming back
I leave the hallway lamp on, still feels like a cave
Walk past your jacket twice like it might start to wave
It gets loud in this apartment
When the fridge kicks on and stops
I hear my own footsteps answer
From the floorboards and the walls
I’m down in the abyss of lonely
No handrail, no signs, no one to notice
Just me and the dark and the same four walls
And every small sound makes the silence crawl
I keep looking for a door
But the room keeps getting more
Like there’s no bottom, only more below
That’s how it goes
In the abyss of lonely
Your mug in the dishwater, your book on the couch
Mail piling up by the door, I don’t sort it out
I talk to the TV just to hear a reply
Then I catch my face in the glass and look away fast
It gets loud in this apartment
When the fridge kicks on and stops
I hear my own name in the plumbing
Then it cuts me off
I’m down in the abyss of lonely
No handrail, no signs, no one to notice
Just me and the dark and the same four walls
And every small sound makes the silence crawl
I keep looking for a door
But the room keeps getting more
Like there’s no bottom, only more below
That’s how it goes
In the abyss of lonely
